Before and Afters :: Downstairs

Filed under: Creative Pursuits - Jess @ 12:04 pm

I mentioned a couple weeks ago that I was painting the downstairs a shade called ‘African Amber’. We were a little skeptical of the pop of color it gave- sort of a peachy, orangy, different-in-whatever-light color. But we’ve grown to love it and I had a friend ask for the name because she liked it so much- very relieving! Excuse the poorly taken pictures!
Here’s the laundry area before…

And after:

Here’s the before and after pictures of the sitting area
(the other half of the room has our desk, table and chairs, and space for playing)…

Now to enlist a little help- if anyone has some curtain (color or style) ideas feel free to throw them down in the comments- I don’t mind making them, and I don’t want to spend a lot of money on them! Any suggestions?

And just because he’s so darn cute…

  1. I just hung sheer chocolate brown “scarfs” on our windows. I love them because there so simple and they don’t look like curtains. You could just buy the sheer material and finish the edges. You basically just wrap the material around the pole and drupe it a bit. The house looks amazing. You have done a fantastic job!

  4. As for me, I love Tab Curtains - and I think they would be easy to make - but I think whatever you do will look great, because you have a natural gift for decorating! I saw the finished product, but it’s really neat to see the before pictures - what am amazing difference! Absolutely lovely!

  5. Hey Jess! First things first-congrats!!! Ok, onto design questions, my new passion :) I absolutely love the warmth the new paint brought to the space. It looks amazing with the sofas and just makes the space feel so cozy! One great thing about window treatments is you can change them with the seasons. I would look for some warm fall colors to complete the feel in the room and give you a warm place to spend time with your family during the cool fall/winter months. Come spring/summer, you can change them out for something lighter! Given that you seem to be a whiz at crafts, you could find some fabric you love and have a set whipped up in no time. I would maybe look for something that would pull the colors out of the pillows shown on your couch-it looks like there are some warm oranges? Anyway, you might have already completed this project but these are my thoughts!

  6. Thanks Diana! More good ideas… how about you just come over and pick out fabric for me?! Ha:) I haven’t curtained up the windows yet but definately need something cozy and private for the downstairs b/c you can see right into the window and it will help insulate the windows for winter. I’ll let you all know what I end up with! Thanks for all the great input everyone!
