Big boy

Filed under: The Kid - Jess @ 5:16 pm

He sleeps in a toddler bed.
He can walk up and down the stairs without holding onto anything.
He talks all day about anything and everything with words and phrases
that never cease to surprise me and make me smile.
The other morning when he woke up I snuggled him, saying,
‘My sweet baby.’
He promptly corrected me, saying, ‘No baby, I’m a big boy Mama!’
‘Oh that’s right’, I said, ‘my big boy!’
Good thing too, because soon there really will be a baby in the house!

A trim gone wrong

Filed under: The Kid, General - Jess @ 6:26 pm
Photobucket So a very tired mama tried to fix a little trim job gone wrong on her 2 year old. But you know how squirmy 2 year olds can be… and soon the trim job to fix the trim job just got worse.

In stepped the sick husband to take over in the hair cutting department much to the tired mama’s relief. It looks a little better. I emphasize the words a little. What could a tired mama do but cry and declare she would never touch her next baby’s hair ever!! (’But honey’, the husband calmly said, ‘remember how his hair was looking like a mullet and we had to fix it and that’s why we cut it in the first place?’ Oh yeah.) So now, thinking about those tears this morning over a silly thing like hair that will grow back I’m having a good chuckle as I look over at my sweet 2 year old’s funky trim job. It will grow back, lucky boy! And I can always say he took the scissors to his own hair if people ask*…:)

*If you are a gramma of this particular little 2 year old please note it really doesn’t look that bad! hehe:)

In Season

There’s a bright note to these cold winter months~ tangy citrus fruits are in season and cheaper than they are the rest of the year. Grapefruit, lemon, oranges, and other citrus fruits offer vitamin C, dietary fiber, calcium, and many other nutrients and minerals. If you can get a hold of lemons that are good price a way to make them last is to squeeze their juice into ice cube trays and then store in a freezer safe container to have on hand for recipes in the coming months.
Here’s a yummy recipe for a rich chocolate cake spiked with fresh grapefruit juice… (more…)

Papa’s train table

Filed under: The Kid, General, Home - Jess @ 4:26 pm

I have to give props to my hubby who busted out his woodworking skills and built Jude a train table! It’s made out of scrap wood we had in the garage from the previous owner but it looks great to me- I’m totally impressed and Jude loves it. One of his all time favorite things to do is to go to ‘the bookstore’ which is Barnes & Noble, because they have a Thomas the Train set on a table. He got a wooden Thomas track and trains for Christmas and loves to play on his own train table at home now. Next up on Andrew’s list is a console table for our upstairs hall.

In baby news, I had a check up yesterday, at 30 weeks along, and baby is doing well. He was moving a lot, as always, and the midwife remarked as she tried to get his heartbeat that she hadn’t seen a baby so active at this point in a pregnancy! He definately seems to be awake and kicking more than Jude was, and I remember thinking how active Jude felt at the time. Maybe Jude will have one crazy little brother, we’ll see!:)

Winter gardening

Filed under: General, Home - Jess @ 12:45 pm

Feeling the chill of a long winter or just ready to be outside again? Now is a great time to think about what you’ll do in your yard or garden this spring and summer, even if just to relieve some of those cooped up winter blues. We inherited a really cool yard from the previous owner’s of our house, with lots of plants that I have not a clue how to take care of but really want to live, so I’m doing a bit of research on those as well as planning for a big vegetable garden.
Two favorite sites for researching and idea gathering of mine are:

‘If I had my child to raise over again…’

Filed under: General, Quotes - Jess @ 1:03 pm

If I had my child to raise all over again,
I’d build self-esteem first, and the house later.
I’d finger-paint more, and point the finger less.
I would do less correcting and more connecting.
I’d take my eyes off my watch, and watch with my eyes.
I’d take more hikes and fly more kites.
I’d stop playing serious, and seriously play.
I would run through more fields and gaze at more stars.
I’d do more hugging and less tugging.

Money money money

Filed under: Thoughts on..., General - Jess @ 10:04 pm

I’ve been thinking about posting a little bloggy on money, mainly on budgeting, and thought January is a good time to think about our budgets, debt, and goals regarding money. This will just skim the surface of money talk so feel free, as always, to leave your comments with any advice or thoughts to add!

Let’s talk about debt. Because no debt= financial freedom, and that’s a good place to be in. Click here to read the rest… (more…)
