play therapy & help for eczema

Jude has taken to the pavement with skinned knees 3 times in the last week. That’s some bloody knees, poor kiddo! He got the 2nd one this morning, right before we were getting ready to leave for church, and I could see that his shorts were getting bloody and he needed a band aid. He’d never worn one before so he got quite upset as I pulled it out, I think he thought it was going to hurt even more, as the tears flowed and he cried for me not to put it on. I reassured him it would help and told him he could put one on one of his animals too, so he reluctantly consented. After it was on he immediately stopped fussing and realized that it didn’t hurt any worse, and got excited about putting a band aid on his animals (we stopped at 2 little cows but I am quite certain ALL of his many little animals would have had a band aid on in the end if I’d let them:) Anyway- all this to say, ‘play therapy’ as Andrew and I refer to it- worked again- either using his imagination to pretend something or an animal or toy to help the situation. Isn’t it funny how amusing some things can be as a parent? For example- imagine if you will a little 2 year old resisting a diaper change (use the potty already little one!!) and a certain papa making a diaper talk the 2 year old into getting changed. ‘Play therapy’:)- works wonders I tell ya!

The other half of my title has to do with little Owie- who has developed a case of eczema, affecting his face, mainly cheeks. It had flared up pretty badly a couple weeks ago and I was wondering if it was an allergic reaction until I did a little online research and realized it was eczema, and found some helpful advice. Keep it clean- bathing little ones often, even daily, can help, or washing the affected area gently with water or a little soap made for sensitive skin. Moisturizing the area well after this also helps, again using lotion for sensitive skin. I love the California Baby line of bath products. Although a bit expensive, I only use tiny amounts at a time so they last a while and they really are great for sensitive skin. They carry a Calendula Cream that is recommended for eczema so I thought I’d try it- and along with cleaning Little O’s face more often it has done wonders- his face looks almost clear, especially after naps and night time, when his hands haven’t been all over his face. The cream is botanically based and can also be used on diaper rash, cradle cap, and scrapes and scratches. Calendula is commonly known as the marigold plant which has long been used for it’s skin healing properties.

Learning & Growing

We drove over to my parent’s house for a fun, long, and relaxing weekend. We got to see lots of family, Jude LOVED playing with his little cousins. Andrew even got to take in a Mariners vs. Giants game (he wasn’t rooting for the home team:) with my dad. The boys are great little travelers and we are so thankful we got to have a weekend away.
Life feels full and busy, but in a good way. Besides being totally blessed to be Jude and Owen’s Mama I’m trying to squeeze in a lot of learning, growing, and doing in my spare time.
The list includes:

*Tending our growing garden. Now sprouting- beans, radishes, lettuce, and zucchini. Andrew just finished making and setting up a compost system out back- more on that to come.

*Reading and soaking in a book called ‘Living for what Really Matters‘ by Stacy and Paula Rinehart. The subtitle is ‘Long terms values in a short term world’. This book has been so good for me- challenging me to look at how I raise my children, spend money, make decisions, etc. in light of eternity. Am I living for only the here and now, or am I looking to what matters in the long run, in eternity? How does this affect my every day life as well as my long term plans?

*Also reading ‘The Busy Person’s Guide to Preserving Food‘ which is packed full of freezing, canning, and dehydrating advice for veggies and fruit. Great resource, I’ll be using it to help me ‘gather the harvest’ this summer and fall to use in winter and spring. I’m trying to move towards even more seasonal eating and also eating from our stocked pantry and freezer in the winter and spring to make the most of our grocery budget, health, and time.

*Trying my hand at making yogurt. I just realized after owning my food dehydrator for about 4 years that I can also make yogurt in it. It’s much cheaper and so easy to make at home so I’m trying my first batch today and plan on sweetening it with a little maple syrup and some peach sauce from last year’s peach harvest.

I am cherishing this baby season with Little O and trying to think of creative, fun things to do with Judo, who seems to soak in and say new long words every day, always wants to be out and about, and loves to make art and of course play cars and trains. Yesterday we were weeding the yard and he came over to me with a bit of grass in his hand and said, ‘look at the delicate spider!’ Too cute. Andrew and I are looking forward to a more relaxed summer schedule and more time together as a family, especially on long summer evenings. We are also very excited about Andrew’s upcoming trip back to The Philip Hayden Foundation Orphanage in China this August. Read more about the trip on his blog!!!

Big boy, big smiles

‘Little O’, as Jude and I like to call him, is growing fast… today at my 6 week midwife checkup we got a rough weight estimate of 15 pounds! He’s wearing clothes that Jude wore at 5 or 6 months old! He has big smiles throughout the day for us too- and sweet little dimples. What a blessing this precious boy is to our family.

Yogurt Pops

A quick, healthy, and cool treat to whip up for warm days…

Photobucket

Blend together:
1 ripe banana
1 cup yogurt
1/4 cup juice or water
1/4 cup sliced fruit
1 tsp vanilla
Pour into popsicle molds and freeze. You can experiment with all different kinds of flavor combinations. I tried peach and banana, and plan on trying peanut butter banana next! You could also substitute cooled fruit tea for the liquid.

Tonight is the big fund raising dinner and auction for Andrew’s team that is going to China this summer. He and the team will head back to the orphanage we were at in November and we’ll be sharing more about that soon.

Walking season

Last year Andrew and I started a Saturday morning tradition- going for a walk. We have some great trails and parks around here, also a walking trail along the river not far from our house. Sometimes we finished the morning at the farmer’s market or grabbed an iced coffee. Today we picked back up where we left off and took a lazy walk down a nearby road that goes past several horses and some farmland. Jude had a blast, Owen slept in the stroller, and Andrew and I got to chat. Welcome to walking season!

Art cards

For baby~ bold black, white, and red images to catch his little eye. Babies eyesight develops for about the first 6 months of life. In the first month or 2 they are able to focus on high contrast patterns, light and dark, and most importantly- a face about 6 inches away from theirs. I’ve seen similar cards to these for sale on Etsy and decided to just make my own with a few sharpies, stamped images of an owl and monkey, thick card stock, and ‘laminate’ them using contact paper. They would be cute hanging by a changing table or above a crib.

Jude loves to color, paint, draw, ‘write lists’, etc. and got into making some of his own art cards which he now requests frequently. I try to rotate what kind of coloring tool I give him- paint, markers, crayons, and I think this keeps projects fresh even if that’s the only thing different than the day before. The other day I heard him playing with his cars and he made one car say to the other, ‘Oh- do you want to make some art?’ That’s my boy!:)

Well in case you think I paid Andrew to say all those nice things about me you’re right. I pay him in beef. That’s his favorite currency:). Really though, sometimes I’m blown away by the grace and patience of my hubby- I feel like I have so much to work on yet he sees the good in me. That’s one of the keys to a successful marriage I think- saying ’so what’ to the not so great little things that one could get hung up on (we all have so many of them anyway) and looking instead at all the things we did marry that person for. Our spouses will never be perfect, so why expect them to be? Be amazed at the person that chooses to love you day in and day out after they’ve seen you first thing in the morning and seen your most tired, cranky self and love you still! So much of life cannot be in our control- so let it go, change what can be changed. (Not the other person- but yourself!) Thanks Andrew Fouche, for choosing to see the best in me and loving me so well. Mother’s Day was a sweet day for me- I woke up so happy to be a mama, to be with my beautiful boys and their papa, to have my Mom and Grammy visit, and spend time in the sunshine.

Mother’s Day Weekend

Filed under: Excursions - Foosh @ 8:26 pm

Well I couldn’t possibly even begin to describe how awesome a mother my beautiful wife is and how flippin’ amazing she is in everything she does. Six years and two kids later I’m more in love with her than I was when we met in Hawaii and blessed to share this life with her.

This weekend was a fun one as Jess’ parents and grandparents came over to be a part of the baby dedication service today and doubly cool that it was Mother’s day. A Baby Dedication is basically our way of publicly stating our commitment to raise Owen in a Godly way (to the best of our ability) and recognizing he is a gift from God.

After the service Jess’ family drove home and we spent some time wandering around Riverfront Park and tried out a pretty decent Hawaiian mix-plate joint nearby. A great weekend!
