Family visits & Fall traditions!

Filed under: Excursions, General - Jess @ 6:48 pm

That’s what we’ve been up to! Oh yes, and turning two rather large box fulls of apples into applesauce, pies, crisps, chips, and art. Recipes, art project ideas, and Owen weighs in for his 6 month checkup- coming this week on the bloggy! We’ve had colder than usual temps recently, getting as low as 19 degrees at night and in the 40’s mid day. It seems we might skip much of the fall weather and jump right into winter around here! I don’t mind, and although there are some outside projects I’d like to get to I am more than eager to give in to cool temps with more tea, hot chocolate, home made soups, and reading on the couch under a blanket!

My Mumsy & Papa came for a quick visit this weekend- fun fun!

We all know who Owie was rooting for! (Hehe)

More to come on Owie bear who tried solid food for the first time this weekend & couldn’t eat it fast enough! He has been studying us when we eat lately & grabbing onto our plates. We’ll give him some banana with rice cereal once a day for a while before adding anything else, but I can tell this kid is gonna eat anything I give him. Video to come of that & of his new moves- the army crawl. We need to bust out the baby gate already because he’s getting quite fast & mobile at 5 1/2 months. I’ll have my hands full with this one!

what do you do with 24 lbs of tomatoes?

24 lbs of tomatoes picked by us on Friday became
one huge batch of some delicious spaghetti sauce…

…and four jars of garden fresh salsa with 3 kinds of peppers.

Not pictured: some sweet & tart strawberries that were frozen for
smoothies and spooned over waffles this morning! It’s been a good eatin’ weekend!! Knowing where our food comes from and making things from scratch: very, very rewarding.

We are enjoying some family time this weekend before the fun and craziness of our fall schedule starts up again. On Saturday night we went to see the Spokane Symphony play a free concert in the park- it was so awesome sitting on blankets with our friends as the sun set and the music filled the air. Jude danced and commented that the trumpet solo ’sounded like a storm’. It’s cool and cozy today and fall is in the air- I love it! We’re sipping on coffee while Jude dances to Beatles music and contemplating what we’ll be doing today. What have you been doing with your holiday weekend?

End of Summer

Manito Park

These last few weeks have been hot, sunny, and filled with summer goodness. From picking strawberries at the local (pesticide free!) farm, endless jugs of ice tea, outdoor movie nights in the backyard with our youth group, peach harvest from our tree, picnics at the park (so great seeing you guys again Joel & Sarah!), and bonfires with friends- we’ve thoroughly enjoyed the last weeks of August. The sun will last for weeks longer, but the mornings and evenings will slowly start to cool down until the air is crisp with Autumn and the pumpkins are large and ripe on the vine. I must admit, I think fall is my favorite season- I love trips to the pumpkin patch, leaves turning golden, cozy sweaters, and yummy things baking in the oven. When Spring rolls around and the long winter is dragging on you might hear me say that Summer is my favorite season, but really I think they all have their delights and because I’m a restless soul that craves change, I love living in a place with seasons. Happy September everyone!

China :: Seattle :: Spokane

We’re so happy to be back together again! Andrew returned from his outreach to China and the boys and I returned from a trip over to the West side. We’ll get some pictures and stories up from the China outreach soon, but for now here’s Jude modeling the outfit Papa brought home for you above.

Our week with my parents was fun and relaxing, thanks for driving us there and back and sharing such a fun time Mums and Papa!! We got to see some of the family, as well as our good friends Erika and Audrey, and my friend Marit and her husband, sweet baby girl Nell, and the rest of her family who our family has known since we were kids. My mom and Marit’s mom met when they were pregnant with us and now it’s so fun to see each other as mamas, from across the ocean- she now lives in Norway! Nell and Owen had fun slobbering on their hands in the stroller together…

My mum and I took in a movie- Julie and Julia- which I loved. Anyone else seen it yet or read the book? It further fueled my inspiration to work my way through a cookbook starting this fall- more on that to come. We took the kiddos to the Children’s Museum with my cousin Heather and her girls, we’ll definately be going back again, there is so much to see and do. It took a while to convince Jude to climb up on the big tractor but Owie was game from the start!

This week we are enjoying time to catch up, play with the boys, and make the most of the last month of summer. Yesterday we went strawberry and corn picking- so much fun! Carver Farms is located less than 10 minutes from us and they have lots of u-pick crops every year, avoid using many pesticides, and have great prices. Our load of berries yielded some delicious jars of strawberry rhubarb jam that is tart, sweet, and oh so good. I freeze my corn, cut from the cob, in small portions for use in soups and casseroles during winter months.

Coming up on this little bloggy… China pictures, Chocolate cream cheese filled cupcakes, (oh my!) and maybe a few more summer recipes. Off to spend time with my amazing hubby… have a great week everyone!

To China with Love

Andrew and his team will be in the air today, on the way to Seattle, then Beijing, and finally to Langfang, an hour outside of Beijing where the Philip Hayden Foundation Orphanage is located. These are the kids that captured Andrew and I’s hearts back in November. All special needs children with huge smiles and loving hearts, being cared for so well at PHF but wanting a forever family of their own. We just found out that Gregg, one of the older boys, is going to be adopted soon by a family here in Spokane! I can’t wait to hear from Andrew about all the kids that we worked with in November and how they are doing now. The team will be there through August 15th- keep them in your prayers!

Here’s Gregg and his contagious smile…

Blueberries & Fireworks

We had such a fun weekend- dinner with good friends, picking blueberries, having a family movie night watching Milo & Otis, and hanging out in down town Spokane. Andrew preached yesterday morning- it was a powerful message and I am so thankful for a husband with vision, purpose and passion like he has.

boys and berries

Last night we ate out at P.F. Chang’s, (free lettuce wraps through July ya’ll!) walked around Riverfront Park, and then enjoyed some of the Royal Fireworks Festival with our friends. The night ended with a great fireworks show, although poor Jude got so scared that Andrew had to walk a ways away and stand under a tree with him so he would calm down. All morning he has told me over and over again how scared he was of the fireworks that went ‘BAM!’ and how Papa held him so he wouldn’t be so scared!:) Owen was in my arms during the show and startled at every bang, but no crying for him- such an easy going little fellow!

We’re trying to pack in as much family time as we can in these few short weeks between Andrew being away at camp and his upcoming trip to China. I miss him like crazy when he’s away but I am so thankful that we are able to pursue our passions (here and abroad) and at least one of us can get back to China this year and work with the precious kids at the orphanage we were at in November.

A camping we will go!

We went on our first camping trip since having kids this weekend with two other families and had a blast. There were seven kids total- ALL BOYS! What fun. Can’t wait to go again with our boys, especially seeing Jude in his element- he loves to be outside, on the go, in new environments- camping was a huge hit with him.

Our trip to California - slideshow style

Filed under: Excursions, General - Jess @ 8:21 am

(Mouse over the bottom right hand side of the slide show to go through pics one by one if you like) We took the trek down to California by car, splitting up our trip each way by staying in Oregon. On the way down we stayed with some dear friends, Mike and Adrienne Davis and their daughter Rosabelle. So fun to see the kids play together, and Rosa loved holding Owie- so sweet! We had a wonderful time in Eureka with all of Andrew’s family. We got to see a few friends as well as visit our old church. The time definately went too fast, we could have used some extra days to have more time with everyone but it was a great trip and we’re so thankful for the time we had there. We celebrated Andrew’s 30th birthday, had lots of BBQ’s and get togethers with the family, went to the ocean, Redwood park, and the Arcata Farmer’s Market. The boys were amazing- sleeping well away from home and having a blast playing with all their grandparents, aunties and uncles.

Want to join us?

Here’s a post from Andrew’s blog about what he’ll be doing at The Philip Hayden Foundation Orphanage this August. I’ll be home with the boys this time but am SO excited for Andrew and the team to be working with this amazing orphanage. Honestly, almost every day a precious little face of one of the kids we met in November at PHF pops into my head. Here’s the details:

We are excited to share with you an exciting opportunity Andrew has to lead a team from our church back to the Philip Hayden Foundation orphanage (PHF) this August! This is the orphanage we were both at last November just outside of Beijing. The children and the work there captured our hearts and we knew as soon as we got home we’d start planning the next trip back. This time Jess will stay home with the boys, but we hope to go back as a family in a couple years. Andrew will be taking 13 people from our church, a mix of all ages and stages in life – some of whom are students in our youth group, which is really exciting.

As you might remember from our last letter, PHF cares for special needs children with anything from cleft lip and palette to heart problems, deformities, etc. They have a team of doctors, surgeons, special needs teachers, and other volunteers working to care for these abandoned children. Chinese nannies give daily care and are there for long, consistent amounts of time which helps the children feel stable and secure. Our hearts were especially touched by these children labeled ‘special needs’. After one day of being at the orphanage we realized that although they may have some major health challenges they are like any other child- just wanting to play, laugh, be loved and cared for. You can see PHF’s website and read more info online at www.chinaorphans.org.

This summer’s ministry will consist of helping care for the children and running a day camp for them. The staff of PHF also expressed their desire to have us help teach the nannies how to play with the children for emotional and physical growth and emotional connection. Because PHF is a privately funded orphanage depending entirely on support from donors to operate, we will also be lending a hand and doing practical work that needs to be done around the facility that they don’t have the resources to tackle.

We are choosing to invest in an ongoing basis in the work done at PHF and have a desire to see the needs of these children met and the vision of PHF furthered not only for the children in their care but the surrounding area as well as China as a whole. Yes- we are dreaming big, and hoping God can use us in even a small way in the work already going on in China as well as the radical impact this work will have on our team, church, and community.

We ask for your prayer support- remembering our team as we prepare to go. We also need to raise $2000 for Andrew to lead this outreach. If you feel able and moved to give there are two ways you can do this- by sending us a (tax deductible) check made out to ‘Liberty Lake Community Church’ and the memo line reading ‘China Outreach’, or you can donate online.

Thanks for being a part of our lives and the work done at PHF!
In Him, Andrew

“Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these, you did it to me.”
- Jesus, Matthew 25:40
